In the entire history of aerial combat none of the air battles can compare with the ferocity of those fought on the Eastern Front. Stretching from the Baltic in the East to the Black Sea in the West covering over 2,000 miles combat was a daily occurrence. Pilots from both sides literally took off and almost immediately engaged in combat.
The Red Army, who controlled the Air Force, instructed their pilots to fly below 15,000 feet and to act in support of the ground forces. The Luftwaffe were quick to capitalize on the tactical error made by the Russians of 'tying down' their fighters. The ME 109s came slashing down out of the sun from their height advantage and over the 5 years of aerial combat more than 100 Luftwaffe fighter pilots claimed in excess of 100 victories.
