RAF Scampton on the afternoon of 16 May 1943 and Lancaster AJ-T ‘Tommy’ is loaded with the ingenious ‘Upkeep’ bouncing bomb by ground crews of 617 Sqn, in preparation for Operation Chastise.
As a reserve aircraft AJ-T wasn't fitted with twin Aldis lamps for gauging the correct height, however after nine aborted attempts Bomb Aimer George ‘Johnny’ Johnson would release their bomb on target, scoring a direct hit on the Sorpe Dam at 00.46 hrs, 17 May 1943.
