On May 13, 1943, while flying the Vought F4U-1 Corsair with VMF-112, Archie Donahue destroyed five Zero fighters in a single engagement, becoming one of only seven Marines to become an Ace in a single day. On April 12, 1945, while flying with VMF-451 Donahue repeated this performance when he scored 5 victories on a single mission over Okinawa.
